Christina Giannelou

Pianist, Musicologist, Educator

Christina Kl. Giannelou was born in 1981 in Karditsa. She is a PhD in Historical Musicology, pianist, theorist and pedagogue. She entered second in the Music Department of the University of Athens (1999) and brilliantly ended (with honors) the same department (2014), supporting her PhD thesis: “Rena Kyriakou. Her compositions. Historical Overview and Thematic Catalogue” (supervisor Katy Romanou – I.K.Y. scholarship).

She graduated from the Athens National Conservatory under Argyris Kallianniotis (counterpoint and fugue – with honors) and she obtained her diploma in piano, under the supervision of Effie Agrafioti, with whom she also studied piano pedagogy and the repertoire of Contemporary Greek Music, giving first performances of works of Greek composers such as Rena Kyriakou, Michalis Vourtsis, Georgios Kazassoglu, Maria Kalogridou, Yiolanda Severi, Sossanna Kladou-Neratzi in Athens Concert Halls, such as Athens Megaron Music Hall, Parnassos Hall, Athens Municipal Theater, Athenaeum etc.

She studied piano repertoire under soloist Dimitri Toufexis, who prepared her to enter Boston Conservatory. Τhere she was accepted in the class of Michael Lewin (2007).

She has written the dictionary entry of “Rena Kyriakou” in Grove Music on Line.

Since 2003 she worked at Athens National Conservatory as a piano and advanced theory professor, at Attiκo Conservatory, Music Schools of Pallene and Ilion, and in primary schools of Athens.

Since 2009 she is working as a permanent piano professor in the Music School of Volos and the Music School of Karditsa.

In 2013, with the chorus of the 1st High School of Sofades she obtained the first position in 5th Nationwide meeting school choirs as a choir conductor.

She has participated in scientific meetings, cultural programs and conferences.

Her research interests include Greek Music of the 19th and the 20th century, music pedagogy, brain possibilities, music therapy and philosophy.
